Yeah, I judge the validity of a movement...

thatisnotfeminism:

Yeah, I judge the validity of a movement based on the people I’ve met too. That’s why I don’t date anyone who remembers the Reagan administration.

No point judging feminism on its members. Judge it by it’s works of the last 15-20 years. It’s resulted in a very strong bias for women in government social programs, created an anti-male/anti-father judicial system, crippled research dedicated to eradicating/finding new treatment options for cancer, as funding for cancers in general have been heavily cut (considering inflation), while female-specific cancers have ballooned in grants and philanthropic grants—the odd thing is, studying male-specific cancers may have stronger benefits than studying cancer in general, and definitely more benefits than studying cancer in women alone, as it is so aggressive in men and the rate of growth is increased. Despite efforts, monies to meet that specific effort have been continuously blocked and denied.

Modern feminism has happily created a common-sense understanding in society that men are more abusive in relationships, when this is a blatant falsehood. Modern feminism has resulted in single fathers, teen fathers, and fathers-to-be getting virtually no special protection, assistance, or education opportunities from governmental institutions. What they do get is laughably pale in comparison to services offered to females in similar situations.

Modern feminism is the very essence of sexism. It caters to and spreads misandry. It has pitted women against men, and made men feel guilty for and ashamed to point out the hypocrisy and failure of the continued existence of feminism. Any public criticism results in the instant labeling of one being sexist, oppressive, fearful of women, and enabling of anything and everything anti-women.

Perhaps most dangerously of all, it has resulted in special rights. Equality cannot exist where one group has special rights over another. The foundation of feminism, in the beginning, found strength in a grassroots effort based on equality. Many of the movements first and most pivotal shakers, of course, were quiet or publicly sexist against men, but without the banner of equality, they had nothing, and they knew it.

Once equality became legally achieved, feminism’s job was achieved. The rest should have been the shared effort of people who understand and value equality for everyone, rights for everyone, and opportunity for everyone. This is something that can, and has been successfully done by non-feminist groups interested in equal rights for everyone, people with penises included. Anything else isn’t a fight for equality.

If we have concerns about, say, a pay gap. Do some actual research on the issue—find out exactly why a pay gap exists, or seems to exist, rather than automatically jump on the oppression boat and condemning society as being anti-woman. Why not bother to find out whether or not men and women are equally productive at work?

Incidentally, that has been done—a few times, actually. How many times have you heard about this on TV? Hell, even Fox News won’t tread those waters, because it’s bad for business. It is difficult to measure productivity in many jobs, such as teaching, where your level of productivity is muddled by the productivity of not just you and your pupils, but parents, a school board, the spending of state and federal agencies, and even what’s to be found in the snack machines and served for breakfast and lunch. Others are easily measured, such as sales representatives—where men tend to be substantially more productive than females, with females making significantly more than males (in most fields) of similar productivity levels.

Asking for raises. How often do you ask for a raise? How do you ask? Do women ask as often as men? Do they use the same strategy? I ask for a raise six months after starting a job. After twelve months, I don’t ask. I expect to have one. Six months my first year, I ask for another raise. Six months after that (twelve months after stating that I think I should have one), I again point out that I should have a raise-I don’t request, I make it known that it’s time for a raise. So, once a year I expect a raise, and am persistent until I get it. Every six months, I request to be reviewed for one.I do it politely and professionally. I don’t bust in all aggressive like I’m the best damn thing that’s happened to the company. I make an argument for myself, and I present this argument to the person(s) responsible with deciding whether or not I’ll be getting a raise. Perhaps most importantly of all, I fully engage myself in my work. I don’t text at work. I’m 33 years old, and I’ve not sent a single text message from work in my life. I’ve never made a private phone call while on the clock from work. I’ve never once visited a website that wasn’t required for work while at work. Whether I was working as a busser cleaning tables at a restaurant, a corrections officer, shoveling horse shit at horse shows, to eventually managing stables for show animals (yep, when from being the guy who shovels shit to the boss), being a supervisor at a large casino and resort, or teaching (well, student teaching, back when I was in college—didn’t get paid for that), I went to work and dedicated myself fully to what I was supposed to be doing without exception. I make a deliberate effort to exceed expectations and to be the kind of employee who can’t reasonably be denied an increase in pay. Jobs that pay on a scale, such as teaching in most states (mine included) won’t have this option, but I still put everything I had into when I was doing it.

Men are far more likely to request/demand an increase in pay.

Incidentally, men are also far more likely to work substantially more than 40 hours a week (by that I mean more than 50 hours a week).

When dealing with a pay game between men and women, everything should be considered before jumping to conclusions that may have severely negative consequences. Even things that are uncomfortable, such as the possibility that some women want the same pay for less work. Having the same job as one person does not mean you’re doing your job as well as the other person, or that you’re willing to do what is necessary to have extra pay, such as working 60-80 hours a week, having liquid schedules, relocating, spending less time with your family.

Another major problem women in the workforce have is that they actually market themselves for less than men do, then complain about making less than men.

Imagine that you own a business. You want to make money. Two people come into your office for an interview concerning a job opening you have available. Both individuals are equally established in the field for which they are applying. Both have similar experience. They appear to be equally qualified for the job.

Now comes the business part of your decision regarding who will get the job.

You have to consider the possibility of being accused of discrimination should the one you opt not to hire happen to belong to any minority, particularly female or black, and sued. That is usually unlikely, so it is often not considered (sadly, resulting in many perfectly innocent business owners and companies being sued, but it’s still unlikely), so we’ll not let that possibility burden us too heavily. We’re more concerned with getting a position filled and getting back to making money. Money. That’s what it’s all about, in the end. The first person you interviewed wrote on the application that the salary expectation is $55,000 a year. The other person wrote $40,000 a year.

Both people are equally qualified. You expect that you would have nearly identical performance levels from each individual. Who is the most financially practical hire? If you didn’t say the one that will cost you $15,000 less every year than the other one, you’re not a typical business owner.

Therein lies a very telling problem with female pay. They ask for less, and if what they ask for is not met with optimism, they’re more likely than men to surrender and accept significantly less pay. Why? I don’t know. I have a passing curiosity about it, but not enough to find out whether or not any research has been done on the issue.

There is no problem in society that is carried by women and women alone. There is no issue with equality that applies to women and women alone. Feminism as an institution is wholly unnecessary.

The word feminism no longer needs to even exist. If you believe in equality and liberty, you are a feminist by default. Simply stating a belief in equality and liberty for everyone should naturally encompass women and any trials and burdens they face as a result of having a vagina—just like it should equally include the burdens faced by people with penises.

You know what I think we need to hear more of? I think we need to hear more about single fathers. Teen fathers. Dead beat mothers. Pretending these people don’t exist has never, and will never help promote equality. It will never make life better for children in poverty. It will never do anything to improve any country. It will never do anything resulting in long-term improvement of life as it is experienced by men OR women.

Maybe you like labeling yourself as a feminist. As for me, I’ll stick to labeling myself as one who believes in equality for everyone. Equal rights for everyone. Equal treatment for everyone. Everyone of every possible variety.

edison-hickey:

Miracle of God - God saves drowning woman using a man’s effort

This beats all! Hallelujah, amen and high praise to the Lord Jesus Christ Almighty! Folks, let me tell you what you see here in this miracle video.

A woman drives her car into water that is far too deep for her car for some reason. I figure God put it in her heart to do it, just so he could make a miracle for the world to see. Kind of like the way the Lord hardened the Pharaoh’s heart so he wouldn’t listen to Moses in order to have a reason to show the world His mighty power of vengeance and smiting. But this one can’t be used by atheists and skeptics and other enemies of the Lord to be twisted to make God look bad! Oh, no! No one dies in this one, and the Lord is made to look wonderful!

I already know what some of you atheists and skeptics and those other freethink people aka enemies of God Himself are thinking. This poor woman probably hit the automatic window roller downer button and made the window go down, then hit it again on her way out in her panic, making it close again. Come on! What are the chances of the same button being struck twice by a panicked drowning victim? Get real! This is obviously the handiwork of God.

Through the grace of Jesus, this woman’s life was spared just so you and me and others can see it and know the Truth of God’s power! It ain’t for those unbelievers and “logical” people who try to explain everything. No, friends. There ain’t now swaying those people with videos like this. This miracle was straight from God for those of us who already know and believe to make us feel more secure in what we believe and know to be Truth! I know it sounds too good, but you have the video right here, brothers and sisters!

Praise Jesus!

Jesus name, amen

Just like any atheist coach trying to convert players adopt his/her atheistic views would undoubtedly (and rightly) be quickly terminated for doing it on the state’s dime.

Who cares that he’s a homophobic religobot? I sure as hell don’t, the country is full of them—and, in its own little way, it’s a beautiful—though painful—reminder of what it means to actually be free. Yet, to be as free as possible, we must have restrictions. One of which is to keep individuals from using state-provided forums to have church. When working for the state, you are an agent of the state. Agents of the state have no business ignoring and blatantly violating the US Constitution, and should be promptly removed and black listed from ever being on the public’s payroll again.

Ugh, what a fucking day...

christiantheatheist:

Live in Alpine, New Jersey, right? My house costs millions of dollars. In my neighborhood, there are four black people. Hundreds of houses, four black people. Who are these black people? Well, there’s me, Mary J. Blige, Jay-Z and Eddie Murphy. Only black people in the whole neighborhood. So let’s break it down, let’s break it down: me, I’m a decent comedian. I’m a’ight. Mary J. Blige, one of the greatest R&B singers to ever walk the Earth. Jay-Z, one of the greatest rappers to ever live. Eddie Murphy, one of the funniest actors to ever, ever do it. Do you know what the white man who lives next door to me does for a living? He’s a fucking dentist! He ain’t the best dentist in the world…he ain’t going to the dental hall of fame…he don’t get plaques for getting rid of plaque. He’s just a yank-your-tooth-out dentist. See, the black man gotta fly to get to somethin’ the white man can walk to.”

-
Chris Rock

see, this is something that aforementioned idiot should listen to. if you think racial equality exists because we have the same purported opportunity to pull ourselves up by our bootstraps, ask if we even started at the same point, when people of color didn’t even have the same opportunities to set up a foundation for the life of this generation. you think your white grandparents got the same jobs as a person of color’s grandparents, so that they could retire and you would know they’d have access to healthcare? you think your white family was offered the same rates (or even chances) for home loans as a family of color’s so that you didn’t have to work a job through high school to meet rent? you think that your mother worrying if you’re going to get into a good college is hard enough? what if on top of that, your mother also had to worry that you might get gunned down in the street because of the color of your skin?

i’m sorry buddy, but you are wrong, and chris rock is so, so right.

(via wordsandturds)

Chris Rock should’ve provided the professions of some of the other white folk. The dentist is a fluke, as becoming a millionaire by practicing dentistry is unlikely to happen—kind of like becoming a millionaire by providing comedy is unlikely to happen. Few do, most don’t. The dentist could make the same argument about how much harder it is for dentists to have what black celebrities have.

Rock’s rant totally dodges the reality of the situation. It belittles the issue and, frankly, does absolutely nothing to bring about improvement.

It reminds me of something that happened several years ago.

I was still in college and was somewhere on campus—can’t remember where or why, but I was in some building or another. I noticed a young fellow haughtily blasting through the doors entering the building (there was a large area inside filled with benches, tables, etc.), and he started heading toward a group of girls on the other side of the lobby. I was sitting out a table, the girls were all clustered around a strange chair of some sort, looked like it was meant for napping.

This young man yelled something along the lines of “you whore bitch,” which, naturally, got my attention. All the girls turned and looked, one of the girls sitting in the chair very visibly sat up with amazing speed. She asked what was wrong. Turns out she’d been having sex with his best friend for nearly a year.

The best friend asked her to break up with him so they could have an open relationship. She declined, saying she’d rather keep things the way the were, as she felt that the boyfriend would have a brighter career and more money. This deeply offended the best friend, so he confessed everything to the boyfriend.

All this came out in a rush of angry words from the boyfriend. Right there in the lobby in front of everyone. The girlfriend screamed that she couldn’t believe he would come in and say it in front of everyone, called him a dick head and a few other things. Oh—she also insulted his sex and claimed he had a small penis. (By the way, I know this to be a false claim, as I’d actually seen this particular person’s penis in the shower, it was perfectly normal, if not a little girthy.) Her friends laughed, called him a loser and told him to go away. He collapsed to his knees and sobbed for a very short moment, then got up and said she was a cunt, and I believe called her a whore again.

Then he left.

What happened next, though rather interesting, was kind of horrific. Still crying, the girlfriend’s friends huddled in tightly as if to engage in some whisper-chat. Fortunately for me, I guess they were too excited for whispering, and were speaking quite loudly. After a moment of nosy questioning from the friends and attempts to comfort her, they then began their campaign to convince this girl that she was a victim of abuse. Literally.

Cheating happens, most people do it at least once, things like this were said. Him calling her a bitch, whore, cunt, and yelling about it in public was abuse. She was the victim of domestic violence. He was a horrible pig. A typical guy. A dick.

Never mind that they were now saying much worse things about him than he did her—calling her a whore, cunt, bitch…some might argue that these words are reasonable, if not out-right expected (if not applicable) when someone is caught cheating. Then they began talking about spreading rumors that he had herpes, confessed to incest in his childhood. It got really morbid.

But what got my panties in a bunch was the claim of abuse. I’ve seen abuse. I know what it looks like. I’ve seen physically abused women—and men. Hell, I’ve been one. I’ve seen emotionally abused women (and men, again—been one of those, too). And you know what? I didn’t see it while looking across the room at that girl. I saw a girl who just got caught cheating by a guy she was expecting to provide her with a better life than her on-the-side lover.

I saw a spoiled brat plotting revenge because she couldn’t have what she wanted.

There is abuse. It’s horrible and real. Economic disadvantages exist for minorities—not just black folk—and it’s horrible and real.

False representations of it (like Rock’s) and false application, like the cheater in the lobby, do nothing to satisfy needs of the actual problems and victims that exist. It distracts from it. And distracting from it makes it worse.

Just my opinion.

religiousragings:

YES. THANK YOU. FINALLY SOMEONE ELSE SAID IT.

I’ve said this so many times, and people always react in one of these ways:

“How can you say that? Of course the Jews were enslaved in Egypt.”

“Well, I don’t know about the specifics, but I definitely believe that the Jews did have a mass-exodus from Egypt. It’s written about in history.”

“You can’t say that, the bible depicts the exodus in great detail.”

No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No.

The Jews were never enslaved in Egypt. It is NOT written about anywhere in history. The bible is not a “historical” account of ANYTHING. Get your fucking facts straight.

The sheer number of people talked about in the story make the whole thing logistically ridiculous.

There is No Such Thing as Absolute Time
According...

quantumaniac:

There is No Such Thing as Absolute Time

According to Einstein’s special theory of relativity, there is no such thing as absolute time. What this means is that there is no universal ‘clock’ ticking the time - every frame of reference has its own perception of time. Thus, there’s no such thing as an absolute present - or future, or past.

All time on Earth is relatively the same for all reference frames because all humans are not moving very fast - and nowhere near light speed. However, if we were moving at drastically different speeds, we would find that time ticks more slowly for the person moving more quickly - we would age at different rates! Similarly, if one of us was closer than the other to a major gravity well like the Earth, we would age slower than someone who wasn’t.

GPS satellites, of course, are both moving quickly and at significant distances from Earth. So their internal clocks show a different time to the receivers on the ground. A lot of computing power has to go into making your sat-nav work around the theory of special relativity.

There are also some very interesting consequences of having a universe such as ours—one in which time itself is a physical component of existence—intertwined with space itself, despite what common sense may cause us to believe. It is because of this that time is relative and susceptible to gravitational forces.

Consider an alien civilization on some far-flung galaxy. Now, let us pretend that this civilization’s solar system is moving through space at a drastically different rate of speed than our own. Depending on whether or not this alien system is moving much faster, or much slower, than our own will affect the way this civilization experiences time relative to us. It’s possible that their present—their right now—is in our future, or past. It’s certain that if we froze all of existence in this exact moment, their “right now” would not match our “right now”. One will be in the other’s future, if even by a little.

Another interesting question which came to mind when I was a teenager: Would this affect how different civilizations (assuming others exist) perceive the age of the universe? Is it possible that a variety of ages could be determined from a variety of points in space, each contradicting one another, each being correct? I’ve asked this question to a few astrophysicists (via email and one at a university), and none had an answer. I’m still curious. Any of you know?

quantumaniac:

The Case of the Missing Dark Matter
A survey of...

quantumaniac:

The Case of the Missing Dark Matter

A survey of the galactic region around our solar system by the European Southern Observatory (ESO) has turned up a surprising lack of dark matter, making its alleged existence even more of a mystery.

Dark matter is an invisible substance that is suspected to exist in large quantity around galaxies, lending mass but emitting no radiation. The only evidence for it comes from its gravitational effect on the material around it… up to now, dark matter itself has not been directly detected. Regardless, it has been estimated to make up 80% of all the mass in the Universe.

A team of astronomers at ESO’s La Silla Observatory in Chile has mapped the region around over 400 stars near the Sun, some of which were over 13,000 light-years distant. What they found was a quantity of material that coincided with what was observable: stars, gas, and dust… but no dark matter.

“The amount of mass that we derive matches very well with what we see — stars, dust and gas — in the region around the Sun,” said team leader Christian Moni Bidin of the Universidad de Concepción in Chile. “But this leaves no room for the extra material — dark matter — that we were expecting. Our calculations show that it should have shown up very clearly in our measurements. But it was just not there!”

Based on the team’s results, the dark matter halos thought to envelop galaxies would have to have “unusual” shapes — making their actual existence highly improbable.

Still, something is causing matter and radiation in the Universe to behave in a way that belies its visible mass. If it’s not dark matter, then what is it?

“Despite the new results, the Milky Way certainly rotates much faster than the visible matter alone can account for,” Bidin said. “So, if dark matter is not present where we expected it, a new solution for the missing mass problem must be found.

“Our results contradict the currently accepted models. The mystery of dark matter has just became even more mysterious.”

case in point why I hate the fuck out of atheists (at least the ones who act like this, I understand that like all groups, they have dicks and normal people)

they seem to think Christianity is the only religion in existence so they must insult it while leaving all other religions out of it.

atheists are the rudest group of people, and they can’t even say that the rude people are doing it wrong the way Christians can say it (because honestly, all rude Christians clearly misread the bulk of the bible, if they even read it), but rude atheists are just atheists. there’s no rule to atheism saying you can’t be a dick to people. they’re just dicks.

I guess this is a silly place to make this rant, but it’s still kind of ridiculous to have said in the first place, and there are idiots out there who need to learn there are multiple religions who believe in a god.

Or, just maybe, it just so happens that you spend most of your atheist-reading time consuming material written in English. If so, it also happens that, by doing so, you’re reading material by people who are primarily surrounded by, affected by, and exposed to…you guessed it: Christianity.

Go to the Middle East and hear what atheists over there talk about. Think it’s Christianity?

Now, maybe instead of being so eager to make yourself a victim (or others, if not yourself specifically), you could realize that your post strongly resembles the product of a dick. If not, that’s okay. But, really, if you can manage to free up some time by relieving yourself of the need to invent instances of victim-hood, I highly recommend spend just a few minutes hoppin’ around on the ‘net to find what a variety of atheists—even English speaking ones!—actually have to say. You may be surprised to find that they also criticize non-Christian religions.

contemplatingmadness:

XNA is synthetic DNA that’s stronger than the real thing

New research has brought us closer than ever to synthesizing entirely new forms of life. An international team of researchers has shown that artificial nucleic acids - called “XNAs” - can replicate and evolve, just like DNA and RNA.

We spoke to one of the researchers who made this breakthrough, to find out how it can affect everything from genetic research to the search for alien life.

The researchers, led by Philipp Holliger and Vitor Pinheiro, synthetic biologists at the Medical Research Council Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge, UK, say their findings have major implications in everything from biotherapeutics, to exobiology, to research into the origins of genetic information itself. This represents a huge breakthrough in the field of synthetic biology.
